Infectious enteritis in pigs; swine dysentery

This is one of the very serious infectious swine diseases occurring very often. Primarily the disease is due to a germ known as the Salmonella suipestifer though its principal lesions and symptoms are effect of the necrosis germ. The two always go hand-in-hand in the production of swine dysentery.

Very frequently an outbreak may be traced to the recent introduction of new members into the herd. It is usually independently present on quite a large number of hog-raising farms. Young pigs up to four or five months of age are chief sufferers. A lack of nicotinic acid - a vitamin B fraction – is said to be a predisposing cause.

The outstanding symptom of the disease is a bloody diarrhea. When this appears within a week or two after new additions to a herd a diagnosis of swine dysentery may be considered to have been established. The animal’s temperature at first high usually subsides as the diarrhea sets in. Sometimes the disease becomes chronic in its character so that ailing pigs do not die though remaining permanently unthrifty. The death rate is highest among young pigs – forty or fifty per cent, less so in feeder swine – ten to twenty per cent, and even less in the mature animals that occasionally become infected – two or five per cent.

The best method of prevention is not to introduce newly purchased swine into a herd until they have first been held in quarantine for three weeks.

When the disease has established itself in a herd it is advisable to at once separate the apparently well animals from those visibly ill. The former should be placed in clean quarters so that have not been occupied by swine for some time previously. The ration should be easily digestible – buttermilk tinged a very light blue colour by passing through it a small bag filled with sulphate of copper crystals has been recommended.

Foot-and mouth disease; epizootic aphtha

This is highly contagious disease of cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, swine, sheep, goats, deer, and others. Horses do not contract this disease. Man is susceptible to mild extent.

The disease is caused by a filterable virus, a substance, presumably living organism so small as to be invisible through the most powerful microscope, and capable passing through the finest filter. This virus is in the blood, milk, and saliva during the fever stage of the disease, and in the blisters that occur during the disease.

The virus may be spread by contaminated litter, by such mechanical means as wheels of conveyances, by the feet of animals and of a man, by garbage, and in other direct and indirect ways.

The disease is much more severe in some outbreaks than others though in swine and sheep it is usually mild. An attack of the disease confers an immunity which rapidly disappears after three months, so that at the expiration of eighteen months the animal is as susceptible as ever. The symptoms of the disease consist largely of blisters, containing a straw-colored fluid, appearing in the mouth, on the muzzle, udder and teats, and between the claws of the feet. Most of the blisters are small, though on the upper surface of the tongue they may be from one to two inches in diameter. The blisters soon rupture leaving a raw, reddened, painful area. Because of these, eating becomes difficult, and there is also much slobbering. Because of blisters on the feet lameness is a prominent symptom and affected animals are prone to assume recumbency. A slight fever is usually present at the beginning. The milk flow is reduced and loss of condition is quite marked.

Combating is the mandatory slaughter of all affected animals, and the sanitary disposal of the carcasses.

Tetanus or “lockjaw”

This disease is due to the bacillus of tetanus (Clostridium tetani) which lives indefinitely in soil, manure, the intestines, and similar places. Its distribution is world wide though most prevalent in the warmer climates. This germ must gain entrance to the animal’s body through a wound or an abrasion. The wound may be so small that it heals outwardly, imprisoning the implanted germ. The latter does not leave the area of the wound to get into the blood stream as is so frequently the case with other germs but remains localized though giving off a very powerful poison or toxin which is said to be one hundred times as powerful as strychnine. It travels along the nerves to reach the spinal cord.

The recognizable symptoms are shown as soon as the toxin established a contact with the spinal cord.

Tetanus may affect horses, cattle, swine, sheep, goats and other animals. Its usual onset is in from a few days to several weeks period after the infection has taken place. The first noticeable symptom is stiffness which in twenty-four hours has become pronounced. Occasionally the stiffness affects certain groups of muscles more than others as in so-called “lockjaw” in which the muscles of the jaw become set. The ears are stiffly upright, the tail is in a rigidly extended position, and the eyes upon the least excitement are retracted into their sockets so the third eyelid is protruded over the eye.

Prevention of the disease consists of thorough cleansing of wounds as soon as they occur. Wounds with extensive laceration and deep penetrating wounds are the most serious because their recesses afford hiding places for the germ. After all parts of the wound have been freely exposed strong tincture of iodine is to be applied daily until the wound is healing. An injection of tetanus antitoxin will protect an animal for at least ten days. Tetanus toxin will protect an animal for some more continuous period.

Tapeworms

Tapeworms are considered segment flatworms belonging to a class of organisms called Cestoda. One important characteristic of this class is that they utilize intermediate hosts in their transmission cycle. Intermediate hosts may vary rodents, fleas and other insects, also rabbits, sheep, swine, cattle, and in some instances even humans.

Tapeworms segments containing eggs are shed in fecal material. When these eggs are accidentally or voluntarily consumed by intermediate host they hatch and the resulting larvae migrate into the body tissues and begin their development. Yet instead, the life cycle is completed when this host or portions thereof are consumed by another, called the definitive host. Inside this new host environment the larvae then proceed to develop into adult tapeworms that attach to the intestinal wall, eat and repeat the life cycle all over again.

The extent of disease caused by tapeworms depends on the type of worm involved, and if the affected individual is an intermediate or final host. As a rule, adult tapeworms living within the intestines of a definitive host are seldom life-threatening, causing varying degrees of gastroenteritis and malnutrition. Larval forms, on the other hand, tend to do more damage simply because they migrate through the body tissues. Furthermore, if these larvae gain enter into the tissues of an animal (or human) that is not a normal intermediate host for that tapeworm the results can sometimes be mortal.

By so far, the most prevalent species of tapeworms seen in dogs and cats is Dipylidium caninum, the double-pored tapeworm. It is rather common because it uses the flea as an intermediate host (the dog louse, for example, can also be a carrier).

Infectious Canine Hepatitis (ICH)

This disease is caused by the canine adenovirus 1, an organism found worldwide and known for its stability outside its host environment (it can survive for up two weeks). The virus is shed in all body excretions, and can be found in the urine of a recovered dog for up to 6 months. Direct contact with such secretions by unsuspected dog usually under 1 year of age and unvaccinated is the way of disease transmission.

As the name implies, once the organism enters the body it can set up a severe inflammation of the liver, or hepatitis. ICH does not, however, stop there. Other organ systems, including the eyes and kidneys can be affected as well.

Enlargement of the tonsils and other lymph nodes occurs as the virus multiplies in these areas. As the liver is attacked, abdominal pain and jaundice become evident. In addition, inflammation of the blood vessels within the body can lead to clotting problems and internal bleeding. One characteristic lesion of infectious canine hepatitis that can develop later as the disease progresses is called “blue eye”. In this condition one or both eyes can take on a blue appearance due to fluid buildup and inflammation within eyes. Diagnosis of infectious canine hepatitis is based on the age of the animal involved, vaccination history, and laboratory data.

Treatment aims are to prevent secondary complications, such as bacterial infections and to give intravenous fluids to combat dehydration. In severe cases blood transfusions could be required. Vaccination is the best way to prevent this disease.
