Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day* is a public holiday in the United States. It now comes on the fourth Thursday in November. This is a day for family reunions. Thanks are offered in the churches for the blessings**of the year, and at home a big dinner that usually includes roast turkey and cranberry sauce*** is served.

Thanksgiving is a harvest festival, and is one of the oldest and most popular celebrations in the world. The original celebration in the United States was held in 1621 after the first harvest in New England. The Pilgrims had sailed across the Atlantic Ocean on the "Mayflower," arriving December 21, 1620. Only half of the original band survived the cold winter. But the first harvest, fortunately, was good.

The date of this first feast is not known and there is no record that it was called "thanksgiving." But two years later the Pilgrims set apart a day of thanks for rain that put an end to a long dry period. Later, Thanksgiving days following harvest came to be celebrated in all the colonies of New England, but not on the same day. It was during the third year of the Civil War, October 3, 1863, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving. In 1951, the United States Congress named the fourth Thursday of November a Thanksgiving Day.

Canada has long celebrated a Thanksgiving Day. It is now always the second Monday in October. They also like turkey, served with fresh vegetables and fruits. Many people go to church in the morning. The first annual Thanksgiving for all the Canadian provinces was October 9, 1879.

Thanksgiving Day* – День благодарения, официальный праздник в память первых колонистов Массачусетса (последний четверг ноября);

blessing **– благословение;

cranberry sauce***– клюквенный соус.

More about London.

London is the capital of England, the capital of Great Britain, and the capital of the United Kingdom. It is the largest town in Europe and one of the oldest towns in the world. The old Celts gave it its name, the Romans! made it the centre of their new colony, the Germanic invaders tried to burn and to destroy it, the victorious Normans made it the capital of the country.

The central part of London is full of historical remains. Nearly every building, every bridge, every street, palace, house, and stone — each of them has its own story, its own past. In London past and present are so mixed together that they cannot easily be separated and when you are in London you see the past in the present and the present in the past.

The oldest part of London is called the City. In the City the streets and pavements are very narrow and the traffic is very heavy on weekdays. That is because the most important London firms and banks have offices there. But at weekends the City is almost dead.

The most fashionable and the most expensive part to live in is the West End. It is
situated between the City and Hyde Park. The City and the West End are the heart
of London; they are the parts which everybody who comes to London must see and
wants to see, because they are more interesting than any other part of London. All
the most interesting buildings, shops and offices are situated here.
The Tower of London, the Bank of England, the Mansion House where the Lord
Mayor lives, the Law Courts, and many interesting old churches are situated in the
City. The Houses of Parliament with Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the National
Gallery and many theatres and good shops are in the West End.
London has many bridges over the Thames, more than twenty but the most
interesting of them all is the Tower Bridge situated near the Tower of London.
The Tower of London is an old Castle, with high walls, high towers, small
Windows and large gardens. Once it was a royal residence, a strong fortress and a
State prison. Here many important people, among them two wives of Henry VIII,
were imprisoned and beheaded.

One of the oldest and the most famous places of London is St. Paul's Cathedral. I has been destroyed and rebuilt several times since the original construction in the 7th Century. It Stands in the centre of the so-called Little Britain. A large part of Little Britain was destroyed during the war: the houses that were close to the Cathedral's walls disappeared and for the first time in centuries St. Paul's Cathedral's beauty can be seen.

The River that Made a City

The importance of the Thames since ancient times has left its mark. Follow the river's course through London and you will see how greatly London has changed over the years. At Chelsea Bridge two periods of history stand almost facing each other. On the North Bank is the Royal Hospital - an elegant, 18th century building by Sir Christopher Wren. On the South Bank there is stark contrast - the rather forbidding Battersea power station, built to provide electricity for modern Londoners.

Further downstream at Vauxhall Bridge time has certainly moved on. In the time of the famous diarist Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) there were beautiful pleasure gardens here, where he "walked long and the wenches gathered pinks". There are no pinks to gather near Vauxhall Bridge to-day, the area contains factories and offices instead. Under Lambeth Bridge, the river flows on past the Victoria flower gardens towards Westminster Bridge. Westminster Bridge is ornate and Victorian, its lamp-posts bearing the initials of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (V and A ) lovingly entwined. Here are the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, built in the 19th century in the fashionable "gothic" style. On the terrace you can watch Members of Parliament having a rest from running the country, and taking tea by the river. From this point all along the embankment run the Embankment Gardens, with their tramps, memorials and flowers. At the riverside itself there is a row of charming Victorian lamp-posts decorated with ferocious-looking dolphins. Even the public benches are decorated with winged sphinxes, showing the fascination the Victorians held for anything exotic.

SCOTCH WHISKY

I spend the morning buying presents for friends back home, arid in the afternoon I visit a distillery where Scotch whisky is made. Scotland is not the only country to produce whisky, but it produces the most famous and the only whisky with the right to be called "Scotch".

I visit the Edradour distillery* the smallest *in Scotland. My guide, a Scots woman wearing a kilt - the traditional tartan "skirt" worn by both women and men-explains that the production processes have remained unchanged for centuries. She tells me how barley is brought in from the fields, soaked in water and dried. The barley - now called malt -is then heated and mixed with yeast and water. The water is very significant: it comes from streams which have flowed through peatrich earth, and each distillery has its own individual stream. The mixture ferments, just like beer* and then it is distilled.

The spirit results from this process is colourless. It is- stored in oak barrels imported from Spain which have previously been used for holding sherry. It is the remains of the sherry in the wood which give the whisky its distinctive golden-brown colour. The spirit stays in the barrel for at least three years. Only then can it be called whisky, and only then can it be bottled and sold, though many whiskies are kept in the barrel for five, 10 or even 20 years. Whisky  bottled at the distillery is called single malt, while the product of mixing whiskies from several distilleries is known as blended whisky.

After a fascinating afternoon I return to Pitlochry for  my last night and my last dinner, in Scotland.

TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS. HALLOWEEN

Halloween is a festival celebrated on October 31st. The name  of  the  holiday  means   "hallowed"   or   "holy  evening" because it happens the day before All Saints Day.

It is said that Halloween is the children's New Year's Eve. They dress up with special costumes, they eat too much, and stay up too late celebrating.

Children go around the neighborhood wearing make-up, and dressed in masks and colorful costumes. The most common costumes are witches, ghosts, skeletons, and popular TV, movie, and storybook characters. Some costumes are homemade; others are bought in stores. The children go door to door saying "trick or treat." People give them candy, cookies, fruit, or money. Sometimes money is collected to help UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund).

Homes, stores, and classrooms are decorated in the traditional Halloween colors, orange and black. Usual decorations are witches, black cats, ghosts, skeletons, and jack-o-lanterns. Jack-o-lanterns are pumpkins that are carved to look like faces. They are placed on doorway entrances and in windows Horror movies and ghost stories are shown on TV on this day

Adults and older children also celebrate Halloween with parades, festivals, and costume parties. Some people create their costumes; other people rent them. Contests are held where the best costume receives a prize. One of the party events popular with children is dunking for apples. Apples are put in tubs filled with water. People try to get the apples using only their mouths; hands cannot be used.

Press in the United Kingdom

I he daily circulation of papers in Britain is just over 14 million copies, which is about 3 papers for every 4 households.

All British papers can be classified into two major groups: quality and popular papers.

A quality paper is a serious national paper that aims at the educated reader. Quality papers contain detailed news coverage and comment, authoritative editorials, a wide range of topical features written by experts in their field, arts and literary reviews and much professional advertising. The quality papers are the «Times», the «Guardian», the «Independent», the «Daily Telegraph» and the «Financial Times».

A popular paper is a newspaper whose format and content is designed for the undemanding reader. Most popular papers are tabloids, i.e. papers with small-size pages (conventionally about 30 cm by 40 cm). They have brief and direct news reports and a large number of photographs. Emphasis is put on personal stories (especially when sensational, or involving a figure in the public eye such as a member of the royal family), and importance is also given to sports and to entertaining features such as cartoons and contests.

Newspapers in Britain are mostly owned by individuals or by big publishing companies called the «empires», not by the government or political parties. The editors of the newspapers are usually allowed considerable freedom of expression. This is not to say that newspapers are without political bias. The political tendency of quality papers varies from conservative (the «Daily Telegraphs) or independent/conservative (the «Times» and the «Financial Times») to centre (the «Independent») and liberal (the «Guardian»). Popular tabloids like the «Daily Express», the «Daily Star» and the «Sun», for example, usually reflect conservative opinion in their comment and reporting, while the «Daily Mirror» has a more left-wing bias.

In addition to national daily newspapers there are nine national papers published on Sundays. Most of «Sundays» contain more reading matter than daily papers, and several of them include «colour supplements)) -separate colour magazines which contain photographically-illustrated feature articles. There is also quite a number of regional papers - usually evening papers or weeklies.

Sports in Britain

The British are a sports-loving nation. Cricket, soccer, rugby, tennis, squash, table tennis, badminton, canoeing and snooker were all invented in Britain. The first rules for such sports as boxing, golf, hockey, yachting and horse-racing also originated from Britain. The most popular sports that people  take part in, rather than watching, are angling, snooker and darts.

Cricket is very much the English game. A match can take five days - and still end in a draw. A form of cricket was being played 250 years ago.

Football began as a contest between neighbouring villages - with no limit to the number on each side, no fixed pitch and almost no rules. The  Football Association drew up the rules of the modern game in 1863 and , in 1888 12 clubs joined together to form the first Football League. England won the World Cup in 1966. Rugby and football became two separate sports when the rules laid down by the Football Association said that: only the goalkeeper could handle the ball. Two kinds of rugby are played in Britain. Rugby Union is played by amateurs in teams of 15 in the south of  England and in Wales (where it is the national sport). Rugby League  is played by professionals in teams of 13 in the north of England.

Golf was probably invented in Holland, but has been played in Scotland for at least 400 years. At first, it was played with balls made of wood, then of leather stuffed with feathers.

The first rules for tennis were drawn up by the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club when it held its first tournament in the London suburb of Wimbledon in 1877. Wimbledon is still the world's most famous tennis event.

There are a lot of sports and games which are popular both among youngsters and grown-ups. 25 million of grownup people take part in sports. Sports is on the programme of all state and private schools and universities.

St. Valentine’s Day.

St Valentine’s Day comes on February 14. It is not a legal or a national holiday. Banks and offices are not closed, but it is a happy little festival for young people. It is widely celebrated among people of all ages by exchange of “valentines”. A ‘valentine’ may mean a special greeting-card or a little present. It may be for the person who receives the gift. St Valentine is the patron of sweethearts. February 14 is the anniversary of his death. The day is the time to send little gifts to those you love. Flowers and candy are favourite presents which sweethearts send to each other. Valentines are special greeting cards. They are often coloured red, have red trimmings and pictures of hearts. Some “valentines “are very fancy, they are trimmed with paper lace and little bows of paper ribbon. They have verses of love poetry printed on them. It is a good day for parties, especially by young people. The hosts trim the hall with red and white paper hearts. Refreshments are often coloured red, like red candy and punch. Sandwiches and cakes are often cut in the shape of hearts. Sometimes, a King and a Queen of Hearts are chosen for the evening of dance

A. Conan Doyle (1859—1930)

With the words "Elementary, my dear Watson     the most famous detective of all time, Sherlock Holmes, starts to explain a crime to his friend, Dr. Watson. That  phrase has now entered the English language.

Sherlock Holmes first appeared in a book called 'Study in Scarlet'. He became famous in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes', first published in the 'Strand Magazine'. After that came a whole series of books about him: 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes', 'The Hound of the Baskervilles', and many others. Many thousands of the Sherlock Holmes books are still sold every year.

Who invented Sherlock Holmes? Arthur Conan Doyle was his inventor. Arthur
Conan Doyle was born in Scotland, of Irish parents. He was a doctor. In 1882 he
moved from Scotland to England, to Southsea near Portsmouth, to set up a
practice. One of the doctors he worked for, Dr. Joseph Bell, was the model for
Sherlock Holmes's friend, Dr. Watson. Conan Doyle's medical knowledge was a,
great help to him in his detective stories.

Conan Doyle started the fashion of the detective story. Today the fashion goes on
— with Simenon's Inspector Maigret stories and the stories of other writers.
And what sort of man is Sherlock Holmes? We learn a lot about him from the
stories in which he appears. He has a thin face and intelligent eyes. He speaks
when he has something to say. He smokes a pipe (he has a collection of them). He
plays the violin. He lives at 221 'B' Baker Street in London.
If you go to London, you will not be able to find 221 'B' Baker Street. But instead
you can go to a pub called "The Sherlock Holmes" in Northumberland Street (ne
Trafalgar Square). In that pub there is a room like Sherlock Holmes's room at 22'.
'B' Baker Street, as described in Conan Doyle's stories. There is also the stuffed
head of a hound. It is said to be the original 'hound of the Baskervilies'!
Sherlock Holmes after more than eighty years is still the most famous detective
the world.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the novelist, first created his famous character, Sherlock
Holmes, in 1885. Six years later, when he wrote another group of stories about the
detective, Sherlock Holmes was a name that everybody knew.
When Conan Doyle began to get tired of writing detective stories, he decided to
'kill' Holmes. He wrote a story in which Holmes meets his great enemy, Professor'
Moriarty, in Switzerland. Holmes and Moriarty fight, and fall over a cliff and are
both killed. The public didn't like it. Conan Doyle had to write another story in
which Holmes comes back.

Conan Doyle was a famous writer. He became popular because of his love for people.

Charles Darwin

Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. He was the fifth child and second son of Robert Waring Darwin and Susannah Wedgwood. Darwin was the British naturalist who became famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection. Like several scientists before him, Darwin believed all the life on earth evolved (developed gradually) over millions of years from a few common ancestors.

From 1831 to 1836 Darwin served as naturalist aboard the H.M.S. Beagle on a British science expedition around the world. In South America Darwin found fossils of extinct animals that were similar to modern species. On the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean he noticed many variations among plants and animals of the same general type as those in South America. The expedition visited places around the world and Darwin studied plants and animals everywhere he went, collecting specimens for further study.

Upon his return to London Darwin conducted thorough research of his notes and specimens. Out of this study grew several related theories: one, evolution did occur; two, evolutionary change was gradual, requiring thousands to millions of years; three, the primary mechanism for evolution was a process called natural selection; and four, the millions of species alive today arose from a single original life form through a branching process called "specialization."

Darwin's theory of evolutionary selection holds that variation within species occurs randomly and that the survival or extinction of each organism is determined by that organism's ability to adapt to its environment. He set these theories forth in his book called, "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life" (1859) or "The Origin of Species" for short. After publication of Origin of Species, Darwin continued to write on botany, geology, and zoology until his death in 1882. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.

Darwin's work had a tremendous impact on religious thought. Many people strongly opposed the idea of evolution because it conflicted with their religious convictions. Darwin avoided talking about the theological and sociological aspects of his work, but other writers used his theories to support their own theories about society. Darwin was a reserved, thorough, hard working scholar who concerned himself with the feelings and emotions not only of his family, but friends and peers as well.

It has been supposed that Darwin renounced evolution on his deathbed. Shortly after his death, temperance campaigner and evangelist Lady Elizabeth Hope claimed she visited Darwin at his deathbed, and witnessed the renunciation. Her story was printed in a Boston newspaper and subsequently spread. Lady Hope's story was refuted by Darwin's daughter Henrietta who stated, "I was present at his deathbed ... He never recanted any of his scientific views, either then or earlier."
